Vista Says I'm Not Connected to the Internet, But I Am

Was messing about on the computer this morning when I noticed that Vista thinks I'm not connected to the Internet, even though I am. The "Network and Sharing Center" says I have "Local Only" access right now... but I can get to sites on the Internet, so obviously that's very wrong.

As it turns out, this is a known issue for Vista and Windows 2008 computer that have more than one network adapter. My computer has a wireless and a wired adapter, so I guess I qualify. I found a little additional discussion (not much) in a forum thread. Not sure why it just started doing this today; it was working fine before. No network changes have happened... except I had to reboot my router yesterday. I wonder if that's what started it. Maybe another router reboot is in order.

i had this same problem. i finally fixed it today. it had to do with windows wmi service. i bet if you go into your "system" portion of your control panel that it's not showing your processor speed or memory either. :)

here's the fix: Type this command and press Enter:

net stop winmgmt

Using Windows Explorer, rename the folder %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository. (For example, %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository_bad). %windir% represents the path to the Windows directory, which is typically C:\Windows.

Switch to Command Prompt window, and type the following and press ENTER after each line:

net start winmgmt

So did this work for the original poster? Or did you find any other fix?

I didn't find a fix nor did I try the suggestion from the comment. Eventually things worked themselves out and I once again show as being connected to the internet. I figure if Microsoft knows about it and has taken the time to write a KB article about the known issue, if there was some fix that would definitely work they'd probably post that, too. It probably doesn't behoove me to fudge around in WMI since I don't know what other systems might be adversely affected by it.
